Introduction

Each quarter, Cause and Social Influence (CSI) tracks the behaviors and motivations of young Americans (ages 18-30) related to social issues and major moments. This is the first report of 2022.

Two years ago, CSI researchers documented the effects of a deadly global pandemic, racial unrest and a national election on young Americans. By the end of last year, as the pandemic affected jobs and the economy, these same researchers saw mental health and women’s rights overtaking this generation’s concern about racial issues. Now in 2022, research seems to reflect a new mindset for young Americans – people who have gained a deeper appreciation for social issues, a desire for more knowledge about them and a readiness to pursue new ways to bring about social change.

Methodology

Cause and Social Influence researchers took a quantitative approach with an online survey fielded March 26-27, 2022, of 1,000 young Americans (ages 18-30) – a nationally representative sample based on census-projected ethnic and demographic composition. With this response rate, the data presented has a 95% confidence interval and 5% margin of error. Respondents were asked to self-identify gender and race/ethnic identity and given the option not to answer.
